Dear Dermaroller-Fans,

When we returned home after four intensive EADV-Congress days, our families, staff and friends asked us: “How was Berlin?” We only could answer: A FANTASTIC PARTY!

Before we prepared our stand for this event we remembered the congress in Paris a year ago. Our last year’s Dermaroller-Stand was so packed and crowded that we decided to book double the space for Berlin, and it turned out we made a mistake: we needed at least three times more the space than anticipated. Michael and I speculated that we would not be able to cope with the run and asked some of our affiliated distributors to help us out. And by the end of the congress we knew what it means to have friends.

They came as far as from Australia (Sean Abel), from the Caribbian (Dr. Vic Baranes), from Israel (Ran Heskia and Rina Edelman), from Italy (Giuseppe Villa), from Greece (Dr. Konstantinos Anastasakis), from Norway (Ingelin Harlem & Yen Teschow), from Belgium (Flor Wellens), from UK (Roger Bloxham) – just to mention a few. More than 6,000 doctors attended the congress, so it was not a surprise that our booth was so packed that we had to stave off many visitors to see us a bit later or even the next days. The Dermaroller was the talk of the congress, and we felt a bit sorry for the empty stands of other teams selling costly ablative light units.

During the hundreds of interviews we gave we clearly received the message that physicians and patients are asking for softer, non-ablative and more effective treatment alternatives. And with all humbleness we can say that the Dermaroller is definitely one of them. Many physicians reported that they had integrated the Collagen-Induction-Therapy into their treatment spectrum and that they were extremely happy with the results they could achieve with the Dermaroller-Therapy. Now they have a versatile instrument to effectively treat scars in various forms, various skin problems, sun damage, hyper-pigmentation, etc.

We introduced the positive results of the latest clinical study on melasma conducted by Dr. Co from the Philippines. Also we gathered information of new successful Dermaroller therapies we never heard before. This actually is not a surprise since many trials take up to one year and more before results can be released. For those doctors without Dermaroller experience and for a delegation from China we organised a workshop in Berlin’s biggest clinic.

One gentleman from the States came to our booth and said: “You guys have the only device of interest on the entire congress.” What a compliment!

SCIENCE: Just in time on the occasion of the congress Dr. Menke from the Berlin University Hospital CHARITÉ presented us her latest findings in transdermal marker delivery with amazing confocal laser images of skin closure after microneedling.

We also could discuss and sign mutual agreements for scientific research on Dermaroller Skin Therapies with several clinics. We shall report.

ABOUT BERLIN: Last time I was there was the day when the Berlin Wall tumbled and with it the communist regime. It then was a dark, forlorn and divided city overshadowed by the aftermaths of a terrible war. Now, twenty years later, this town has emerged from the sludge of history and transformed into a beautiful modern city, the German People can be proud of. It is embedded in huge parks and Berlin most likely is the greenest capital in the world. I admit, I did not know much about Berlin and during the many taxi trips I was happy to get a glimpse on what people are capable to restore in almost no time.

Berlin has a special gastronomic atmosphere with many “typical” bars and restaurants. We invited our distributors in one of them and they all agreed: “What a place!”

If you once will have the opportunity to go to Berlin, you’ll not regret it. And one little tip: stay at the Radisson SAS-Hotel. The lobby is dominated by a huge aquarium about six stories high and filled with one million litres of seawater for tropical fishes. A centre lift in the huge glass tube will carry you off into an amazing underwater world.

CUNCLUSION

No doubt, such a congress is a real stress. The voice is almost gone and your aching feet are flat like a pancake – but the efforts are worthwhile. And a final drink at the bar helps to forget the endeavours.

ORIGINAL and COPY

The internet is flooded with cheap roller copies, and when you are interested in them keep always the popular saying in mind:

If you want to pay with peanuts, you should not be surprised when you are served by a monkey.

Innocent consumers are often the targets of ruthless copy pirates. These days more or less everything is forged – from a Rolex, car spare parts to medical devices, and unfortunately this applies also for the Dermaroller™. Curious persons want to buy the ORIGINAL but also want to “save some money” and once they have paid and received the order, it is too late and they are disappointed victims. No doubt, the Internet is a fantastic tool to obtain information, but it is also a platform for pirates. They even have no scruples to misuse protected Trademarks (TM), may it be on their copy products or websites. They sell, abscond and the consumer holds the short end of the stick.

From our point of view to copy a medical device, offer it to the public on Internet platforms and to invite people for self-treatment is a crime. The copiers often claim their product is MADE in XXX, but matter of fact most originate from some backyard outlets. They also claim and imprint on their packing it is FDA approved or CE-marked. All this is totally wrong and actually a criminal act in the USA and European Countries.

“Can I use the FDA logo? The FDA logo should not be used to misrepresent the agency nor to suggest that FDA endorses any private organization, product, or service. Misuse of the FDA logo may violate federal law and subject those responsible to criminal penalties.”

They also claim their product is sterile – but have no validated proof. How can a consumer be sure that this copy was not used before and that it is not contaminated with a dangerous virus? – He or She simply can’t. Even when listed with the FDA this does not mean the device is in accordance with the governmental regulations. Any medical device made or imported in the US must comply with the FDA regulations Part 820. If they don’t they are considered as an adulteration.

We know it is very difficult for a layperson to figure out what is right and what is wrong. And in order to guide you to the ORIGINAL the GENUINE and to bring some light in this jungle, here are some useful hints how to differentiate the copy from the Original.

Never buy a Medical Device Class I or II (needle roller):

When the packing indicates that it is FDA approved or if it carries the FDA logo. If you are in doubt, contact the FDA. Ask the vendor to show you a copy of the approval.

When the packing has no CE-mark followed with a 4-diget number. This 4-diget number indicates the European Notified Body that approved the instrument as a medical device that can be freely traded and is in conformity with the European Regulations, Annex V. Ask the vendor to show such a Certificate of Conformity issued in the name of the manufacturer and where it is registered. If he can’t, it is an illegal device or in many cases this CE-mark is forget.

When the packing carries the imprint GMP. This means Good Manufacturing Practice and is similar to the European ISO 13485 (International Organization of Standardization). Ask the vendor for the GMP Certificate issued in the name of the manufacturer. If you are in doubt ask the FDA.

When the packing indicates that the medical device is sterile and has needles longer than 0.3 mm and can be used several times. Copiers often say that their roller can be sterilized at home by submerging it in alcohol or other detergents. Don’t do it! Alcohol is not a sterilizer, it only can disinfect to a certain extent, but an AIDS virus is not killed.

When you are invited to treat your self with a needle roller, especially when needles are longer than 0.2 mm. Such an invitation you often can read on the vendor’s Internet site. Don’t do it!

Needles, also those of a needle roller, are invasive instruments, and if they are not guaranteed sterile they will transport bacteria into the dermis. This can result in blood poisoning, massive infections with possible and permanent disfigurement of your skin. Therefore any needle roller with needles longer than 0.2 mm is a SINGLE USE DISPOSABLE instrument.

When you buy rollers from the Internet with needles longer than 1.5 mm you risk severe tissue damage, vessel and nerve rupture and nasty haematomas, and more…

Never apply a numbing cream outside a doctor’s office on your skin. Numbing creams, especially those without GMP approval, can lead to a fatal anaphylactic shock.

Copy Pirates never produce any scientific evidence. Their aim is the quick Dollar and a fooled consumer. Copiers only imitate but without engineering knowledge. They often use third class steel, thick and dull needles, and hazardous materials. Don’t get fooled, even these copies have an appealing lock.

LIABILITY. Please keep in mind one very important point: Copiers never hold a liability insurance for their device in case “something happens”. No insurance company will underwrite a risk if the vendor or manufacturer is not GMP or ISO certified.

Don’t be taken in by such trademark infringements spelled and written in various ways such as: dermarollers (with an “s” at the end) derma-roller Dermaroller-planet Scientia Derma Roller MTS Roller Dr-roller and so on. These copiers hardly produce any scientific papers and often steel text and pictures from our website – sad but true.

We invented and patented the Dermaroller in the year 2000. It is a fantastic, simple and most effective instrument for skin improvement and acknowledged by physicians all over the world.

Except the Home Care Dermaroller with its harmless short needles of 0.2 mm, a Dermaroller, especially the medical version, belongs in the hands of a trained and licensed skin care professional. Only the professional has the knowledge of skin anatomy and knows when and how to use the Dermaroller. The treatment of acne scars or stretch marks is far less expensive than other ablative procedures. Please, contact a physician and never treat yourself! All medical Dermarollers are SINGLE USE DISPOSABLE instruments that must be disposed after use according to regulations!

SUMMERTIME

Summertime…

Time to relax. Break down the stress you built up in recent months.

And we, the Dermaroller team, would like to give you some useful tips how to optimise the most precious time of the year.

A nicely bronzed skin is associated with youth and health – at least we believe so. Unfortunately this is not the fact. It all depends on your skin type and is associated with the production of melanin, the pigment layer that protects your skin cell DNA from sun damage.

You may think “this little sun exposure” is harmless. Possibly yes for the first, second and third time… But, and this you should always keep in mind: Your skin cells never forget! DNA cell damage is culminating, and each sun exposure adds a little more damage over the course of the years. There will be a time, latest above the thirties, when skin cell damage becomes visible and that damage is irreversible! It results in degraded collagen fibres, more or less pronounced wrinkles and lax skin. A Collagen-Induction-Therapy with the DERMAROLLER can reduce this sun damage by stimulating new collagen layers to a certain extent, but your skin as such will never be what it was before – without sun damage.

Stay in the shade where you still have enough UV-A and UV-B rays. Use a “good” sunscreen with a mineral sun protection filter with a factor of at least 30 (SPF30). This filters about 96% of all sunrays. (So-called sun blockers usually have chemical filters that are affected by perspiration and must be renewed every 2 hours).

Relax in the shade, and let your dreams carry you away. Sleep as much and as long as you want – sleep is the best cell regenerator.

DERMAROLLER INSPIRED LONDON CONFERENCE

Again the Dermaroller was introduced to an international auditorium of Experts in Aesthetic Medicine on the FACE CONFERENCE in London.

While the Plastic Surgeon Dr Martin Schwarz gave a superb speech and displayed his excellent results on Stretch Marks, Scar treatments and reduction in Age Spots, his colleague Dr Sach Mohan performed an impressive live procedure for skin rejuvenation.

After having attended so many lectures from morning to evening we could not await the Charity Dinner set for Saturday evening. But before we strolled through London to see the crowds that came all over the country to celebrate Her Majesty’s Birthday. The weather was just perfect and we took the chance to climb into the famous London Eye. A Must for everybody that visits this smashing Town, so full of life, one hardly can experience anywhere in the World.

When we arrived at Piccadilly Circus the police stopped the entire traffic to give way to the most curious demonstration we have ever seen. About 1000 or more naked cyclists rushed through London.

They all laughed and cheered but we never got an answer for the reason of this demonstration – possibly the British Nudist Club welcomes Global Warming.

Seven thirty p.m. we arrived at the MADAME TUSSAUDS MUSEUM to attend the Charity Gala Dinner. While drinks and canapés were served we stood among the Celebrities and Famous of this World. It was like a dream walk from history to today. They all looked real, just alive and smiled at us – and we had lots of fun talking to them.

First Dermaroller Training Centers in Nevada & Florida

First Training Centers for DERMAROLLER® THERAPY opened in Nevada and Florida.

Phillip Terrazas, General Manager of CYNERGY invited us to RENO to give lectures for the Dermaroller Therapy and to train physicians hands-on. The initial workshop was held in the spacious clinic of Dr Corazon Ibarra, an international renowned specialist for acupuncture and homeopathy. She was supported by her colleagues from Florida Jiji Cook and Gina Blinton from SEASIDE ACUPUNCTURE in Florida.
Motto of the workshop was: Intensive training is the secret of all skills.

The first step was a slide-show lecture of about one hour that explained the physiological mechanisms of action how and why the soft alternative DERMAROLLER® THERAPY is so successful in treating sun damaged or aged skin, atrophic scars, acne scars, pigmentation problems, stretch marks and other skin problems.

One of the training topics was the demonstration that fine micro-needles are very powerful and yet very soft alternative therapeutic tools. Initially precisely set acupuncture needles anaesthetised the skin within minutes. After they were removed the needles of the medical Dermaroller effortlessly treated the skin to stimulate new collagen formations and improved blood supply in the dermis without causing pain.

We also had some curious visitors that came to the clinic to see what the Dermaroller Therapy was like. When they saw the easy and painless treatment they put their scepticism aside and spontaneously asked for a treatment of their sun-damaged skin. Also the cameraman and his assistance that really had a very close look to the procedure for several hours, lied down and were Dermarolled.

We spent 3 beautiful days in Reno and than we proceeded to the magnificent City of San Francisco for another 3 days. All workshop participants agreed that it was a superb start for the Dermaroller in USA. Now the ball is in the basket of our partners from Nevada and Florida to spread the news and to train other physicians on the West and East Coast of the United States. For 2009 it is our common goal to set up at least 30 Dermaroller Centers along each coast.

It was kind of a stressful journey, but for all the wonderful people we met as well as for ourselves it was worthwhile to come and teach and we left the US with a feeling that we have inspired confidence and competence.

ICE-PICK & BOXCAR SCARS

Dr. Jacob and colleagues defined acne scars in 3 major subtypes:

The rolling scar type is the most common one, and it can be treated with several therapies, mainly with surgical subsicion in order to release the tension on the scar. Since this type is treated with the Dermaroller, subsicion became obsolete and improvement could reach up to 80% provided the procedure was performed by a specialised physician.

But for the ice pick and boxcar types so far the only effective therapy was surgical removal. Since we have developed a new procedure technique combined with a special tooled needle to treat these kinds of scars, we are extremely proud to present you our latest results.

We are most grateful and we would like to thank our friend Dr. Igor Safonov from Kiev/Ukraine that he followed our invitation to concentrate on the treatment of ice pick and boxcar scars.

DERMAROLLER® – A SUCCESS STORY IN UK

SUCCESS surely is a matter of devotion and hard work. The GM of AesthetiCare Ltd., Roger Bloxham, contacted our head-office first time in July 2008. After a personal meeting we agreed to have the first hands-on workshop with several physicians in October in London. We gave a lecture to explain the mechanism of action how to induce new body own collagen, and our Vice President Michael guided the hands of the skin care professionals over wrinkles, scars and acne scars and explained the little handling tricks how to achieve the best possible results. The professionals were impressed by the Dermaroller performance and hurried to spread the news to their patients, not only in Harley Street, but all over UK.

Since this initial experience in October it seems to us that Roger worked tirelessly, at least 25 hours a day. All over England he convinced physicians to use the Genuine Dermaroller Concept and organised workshops. Today, after only 4 months of intensive devotion over 40 clinics offer the genuine performance of the Dermaroller-Concept. Dermaroller comes to Beirut

Next day my plane took me straight to Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, so beautifully located at the East of the Mediterranean Sea. I followed an invitation of Dr. Rahbani to introduce the Dermaroller Concept to the successors of the old Phoenicians. One of the oldest trading nations that ruled the Seas long before the Romans came to their place – and ruined it.

The person that bought the land in front of the new Mosque had bad luck. Once they started digging, ancient ruins showed up

Once you enter the ancient city you really don’t know if you are in Paris or in the ancient oriental world. Here you can see what seems somehow impossible: A mosque next to a Roman Catholic or an Orthodox church. Many religions lived here since hundreds of years peacefully shoulder to shoulder.

Efforts are tremendous to rebuild the war torn city that was destroyed in the last decades by stupid wars. Once Beirut was called the Paris of the East and the government does everything possible to regain that image. But still there are many ruins in the middle of the town that await restoration.

But the people of Lebanon have not really changed since I saw them first so many years ago. As they are traders and merchants since thousands of years they have developed two significant skills: languages and the charm you need to convince your partner that your trading good is the best. Their school system is one of the best you can find in the world and more or less everybody, at least with high school education, speaks 3 languages fluently: Arab, French, English and often some more languages.

The Lebanese kitchen is definitely the best in the Orient and the shops are as elegant as in Paris or New York. The climate is moderate. In springtime you swim in the Mediterranean Sea, and only an hours drive takes you up into the snow of the Lebanon Mountains – a Pearl of Culture, impossible to find a second time in this world.

Dermaroller in Kuwait

Have you ever been In Kuwait? It is unlikely, but we have been called to that oil rich desert place north of the Arabian Gulf to introduce the Dermaroller to give lectures and do hands-on training with the local medical society that is mainly influenced by Egyptian physicians.

Kuwait is a relatively small but extremely oil-rich country. In some areas the oil can be collected from the surface. It has about 2.5 million inhabitants, 80% of them are foreigners. It is an old trading settlement dating back several thousands of years.

The attendance with over 70 physicians clearly demonstrated the huge interest in the Dermaroller therapy for scars and photo-damaged skin and pigmentation problems. The workshop was followed by many questions and discussions and later on by a typical Arabian dinner one only can expect in this region of the world.
